Heritage walk to showcase Mandi’s social, religious legacy during Mahashivratri fair

For the first time, a heritage walk will be organised during the international Mahashivratri festival in Mandi district, offering visitors a unique opportunity to closely experience the town’s glorious history, ancient temples, architectural excellence, social structure and deep-rooted spiritual traditions. The heritage walk will be conducted daily.

Sharing details of the initiative, Mandi Additional Deputy Commissioner Gursimar Singh said a comprehensive action plan had been prepared for the walk. During the walk, participants would be introduced to Mandi town’s historical landmarks, distinctive architectural styles and the chronological development of the city. Along with this, detailed information about renowned temples, the historical significance of these, associated beliefs and construction styles shall also be shared.

He further stated that the heritage walk would highlight the history, architectural features and cultural importance of 300 to 500-year-old temples of immense historical and archaeological value. This initiative is expected to not only promote religious tourism but also strengthen Mandi’s distinct cultural identity.

Nestled in the heart of Himachal Pradesh, Mandi town represents a rare confluence of natural beauty, historical heritage and rich cultural traditions. Popularly known as ‘Chhoti Kashi’, the town is home to numerous ancient temples that symbolise its glorious past and have served as centres of spiritual consciousness for centuries.

Prominent temples such as the Trilokinath Temple (built in the 16th century), Panchvaktra Temple, Ardhanarishwar Temple, Baba Bhootnath Temple, along with several other shrines, reflect the spiritual devotion, refined craftsmanship and Sanatan traditions of the erstwhile Sen Rajput rulers.

Through the heritage walk, local residents as well as devotees and tourists from across the country and abroad will gain deeper insights into Mandi’s architecture, sculpture, history of the Mandi princely state, social life and religious beliefs. The initiative aims to enrich the overall cultural experience of the Mahashivratri festival, while preserving and promoting the town’s heritage.
