Himachal Pradesh’s Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation set a world record on Tuesday when it made 1,995 kg of khichdi served in a single utensil at the Tattapani Tourism Festival held at Karsog in Mandi district.
Khichdi is a traditional dish made of rice and lentils served on Makar Sankranti, a harvest festival. An adjudicator of Guinness World Record announced the new record.
The previous record was set at 918.8 kg.
The state tourism department held the event in collaboration with the Durga Devi Bihari Lal Virochan.
Some 25 chefs used 405 kg rice, 190 kg pulses, 90 kg ghee, 55 kg spices and over 1,000 litres of water to cook the dish in a 7x4 feet vessel, Durga Devi Bihari Lal Virochan Charitable Trust Chairman Ramesh Chand Sood said.
Director Tourism and Aviation Yunus said the event was aimed at putting Tattapani on the world tourism map.
Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, who addressed the event on Tuesday, said that the state government wanted to develop Tattapani as a tourist spot for known for water sports.
Thakur also flagged off the Himachal Road Transport Corporation’s Tourism Circuit Bus and laid the foundation stone of a lift water supply scheme that is projected to cost Rs 25 crore. The project is estimated to benefit 174 habitations of the area.
