History students explore state’s cultural heritage

Students from the History Department of Sardar Patel University, Mandi, visited the Himachal Art Gallery in Mandi district, accompanied by Vice-Chancellor Lalit Kumar Awasthi and Assistant Professor Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma. The gallery’s founder and curator, Birbal Sharma, guided the students through the collection.

VC Awasthi highlighted that history is not limited to books but can be understood through art, crafts, and historical artifacts. He described the gallery as a unique confluence of art, culture, and history, emphasising that such visits enhance students’ curiosity and research skills.

Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma, the program coordinator, noted that the visit would benefit students’ historical research. He mentioned that postgraduate students Kareema and Subham Walia are currently conducting research at the gallery under his guidance. He also introduced students to modern research techniques in the field of history.

Birbal Sharma shared his vision of preserving Himachal Pradesh’s traditional art and historical artifacts. He expressed pride in engaging the younger generation with the region’s cultural heritage. The students explored various paintings, historical artifacts, and crafts, gaining valuable insights.

Research students Suraksha, Shubham, Kareema, and Neetika described the visit as highly informative and inspiring, stating that it would greatly support their studies.

At the end of the tour, Dr. Sharma and the students expressed their gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and the gallery founder for their hospitality and guidance.
