HPU win north zone basketball meet

Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has emerged victorious in the North Zone Men’s Basketball Championship at DAV College, Kangra, by defeating Panjab University, Chandigarh, 42-38 in a thrilling final.

Punjabi University, Patiala, clinched the third prize after it defeated Lovely Professional University (LPU), Jalandhar, 78-35.

Ajay Verma, vice-chairman, Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), was the chief guest at the closing ceremony along with Prof Rakesh Verma, tournament observer and Prof Sanjay Sharma, Director of Physical Education, HPU.

Speaking on the occasion, Verma urged the youth to stay away from drugs and make sports as an integral part of their lives. “Sports not only keeps us healthy but also provides a direction and inculcates discipline in life,” He said.

Appreciating the college’s principal, Verma said the college was able to successfully host such a championship due to his able leadership which has set an example.

The winning teams were awarded with trophies and certificates during the award ceremony. Prof Mahavir Singh, VC, HPU, also congratulated the winners. Eighty-five teams from the north zone participated in the championship.
