The IGMC contract workers union, affiliated with the Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) , has decided to stage a protest on February 12 over withdrawal of four labour laws.

The decision was taken during a general meeting of the union held at IGMC. Vijendra Mehra, State President, CITU said that the union demands that all workers are paid the full minimum wage declared by the state government from time to time, and that all outstanding wages, including interest, be paid in one lump sum for any underpaid wages.

Demand for higher skilled category wages for outsourced nursing staff is a violation of the employment schedule established by the state government for hospitals, nursing and medical colleges.

Nursing staff and all other employees should be paid equal for equal work, as per the directives of the Supreme Court. Also, each worker should be immediately issued a photo identity card verified by the Labor Department. The workers should also be paid for overtime work at a double rate. The workers should also be paid full wages before the seventh day of a month and they should also be provided with a detailed pay slip.

The mistreatment and abuse of workers by supervisors should be immediately curbed, and strict action should be taken against those found guilty. “Separate toilets for female workers should be provided in the laundry department within 15 days. Workers marking attendance at three or four locations should be immediately stopped” he said.

The union also warned of intensifying their movement and going on a strike if their demands are not met.
