Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC) at Tanda in Kangra district has created medical history by successfully performing the state’s first robotic renal transplant. This marks a transformative step in super-specialty healthcare in Himachal. The breakthrough procedure was completed late Tuesday night, opening a new chapter in precision, safety and innovation in transplant surgery.
The landmark live-related ABO-compatible transplant was carried out after Lovely donated a kidney to her husband, Ajay, an inspiring act of compassion and familial support that gave a new lease of life to him.
A highly skilled multidisciplinary team led the milestone procedure. The surgical team comprised Dr Amit Sharma, Dr Somraj Mahajan, Dr Ashish Sharma, Dr Depesh and Dr Kushal, who executed the complex robotic surgery with exceptional expertise. They were supported by a nephrology team comprising Dr Abhinav Rana, Dr Divyam, Dr Sakshi and Dr Harshita while the anaesthesia team led by Dr Nanish ensured seamless intraoperative care.
Behind the scenes, transplant coordinators Neeraj Jamwal and Kalpana Sharma, along with the operating theatre (OT) staff, ensured the coordination essential for such an advanced surgery.
This achievement also marks the 23rd renal transplant at the RPGMC-Tanda, reflecting the institution’s growing leadership in renal care. The adoption of robotic technology is expected to reduce surgical trauma, enable quicker recovery, shorten hospital stays and improve patient outcomes, bringing global standards of care closer to the region.
The success of the transplant programme is rooted in the mentorship of Principal Dr Milap Sharma, whose leadership has accelerated the development of advanced medical services at the institution.
The team expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for his continued support in strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
With this pioneering accomplishment, the Tanda hospital has positioned itself at the forefront of advanced medical innovation, reaffirming its commitment to delivering quality healthcare in Himachal Pradesh.
