Mohan Sharma, mathematician and Principal of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Indora in Kangra district, on Monday presented a research paper during the 14th National Conference on Mathematics Education, being held at the Regional Institute of Education (RIE), Ajmer, in Rajasthan from December 22 to 24.
The conference is being organised by the RIE under the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT). The event marks National Mathematics Day — the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the country’s greatest mathematicians.
In the conference, 180 research papers were received, out of which 92 were selected — including the one submitted by Shama.
His research paper, titled “Data detectives: a blended learning framework of seventh class mathematics-concept of data handling”, focussed on innovative practices in mathematics for learners in the classroom.
His research work also delves into making the concept of data handling meaningful and engaging through real-life correlations, blended learning strategies, differentiated instruction and pear assessment. The framework encourages students to explore data as ‘data detectives’, promoting critical thinking, collaboration pedagogy, experiential learning and research-based teaching practices.
Sharma has already presented six research papers on different platforms.
Two of these — “A study of difficulties faced by children in learning limit at class plus one and its remedial measure” and “Innovative practices in mathematics education covering gaps in math learning” — were published in September, 2021, and March, 2019, respectively, in the Global Journal for Research Education.
Sharma has 29 years of experience teaching mathematics in government schools, and three of his projects have been recognised for small grants by US-based organisations.
