Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur today lambasted the Congress government in the state for using force against protesters. He said that the government should work within the ambit of the law.

Thakur, in a press statement issued, stated that the government was not respecting public sentiments and was trying to brutally crush democratic demonstrations by people. “The brutality of the government against the protesters is unjustified. This is not in the interest of the state,” he added.

He said, “Why is the state government not holding talks with the protesters and assuring them of justice. Can some illegal construction force the government to ignore it but lathi-charge peacefully protesting people and use water cannon to disperse them.”

Thakur said that the state government should desist from this dictatorial attitude. He added that after Sanjauli, the forceful action on peaceful protesters in Mandi was unfortunate. “It is unfortunate that the government is disrespecting the sentiments of people, who expect justice from it but instead dealt with brutally,” he added.

He alleged, “Due to the brutality of the government, the protests are becoming violent across the state. people across the state are closing their shops and markets and taking out silent processions in protest against the brutality against the protesters in Sanjauli and Mandi.

“Will the Congress government not allow people to protest peacefully, which is their democratic right? The concerns of the people of the state should be heard seriously and a proper solution to the problem should be found,” he added. Thakur also paid homage to two Army personnel from Himachal Pradesh, who were martyred in Jammu and Kashmir.
