Illegal mining in or around the river poses a serious threat to its water quality and public health, says SDM
SDM OP Yadav has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the owner of a JCB machine that was found to be illegally extracting sand and stones from the Neugal riverbed.
Local administration officials conducted an inspection after receiving reports about unauthorised mining on the riverbed. They found that heavy machinery was being used without obtaining the mandatory permissions from the departments concerned. They said that the use of a JCB machine to extract minor minerals from the river constituted the violation of mining and environmental regulations.
Yadav said that the Neugal river was one of the primary sources of drinking water for Palampur and its adjoining areas. Any illegal activity in or around the river posed a serious threat to its water quality and public health.
