Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday announced that the gynaecology OPD services are being shifted from Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH) to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla, citing the need to provide women with access to modern medical technology and improved treatment facilities. He said the IGMC has already introduced robotic surgery, which will now be utilised for gynaecological procedures.

Clarifying the move, the Chief Minister said only the OPD services are being relocated, while KNH will continue to function as a dedicated mother and child hospital. He emphasised that the decision was driven purely by healthcare considerations, dismissing allegations of any political motive. Highlighting infrastructural gaps at KNH, he pointed out that some equipment, including ultrasound machines, is over 15 years old, making IGMC a more viable option for advanced diagnostics and care.

However, the decision has triggered strong opposition from the All-India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), which has been leading protests against the move. The organisation alleged that the Chief Minister was being misinformed and argued that most gynaecological surgeries are effectively performed through laparoscopic methods, which are more affordable than robotic procedures.

AIDWA further warned that shifting services to IGMC could overburden its already strained diagnostic infrastructure, leading to longer waiting times for essential tests such as ultrasounds, X-rays and blood investigations. They maintained that if advanced facilities like robotic surgery are to be introduced, they should instead be made available at KNH to avoid inconvenience to patients.
