Kullu drug supplier trying to flee country nabbed at IGI Airport

Kullu Superintendent of Police Madan Lal Kaushal said the police had achieved significant breakthroughs in two separate cases registered at Bhuntar police station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The SP said that on January 29, 2026, an FIR was registered under Sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act at Bhuntar. During the operation, two accused — Gurvendra (22) and Harman Singh (22), both residents of Sangrur district in Punjab — were apprehended and found in possession of 29 grams of heroin (chitta). The contraband was seized in accordance with prescribed legal procedures.

During sustained custodial interrogation, the accused disclosed that the recovered heroin had been procured from Puneet Kumar, alias Parry (26), a resident of Sangrur district, for Rs 31,500. Acting upon this disclosure and corroborative leads, the police launched a search operation to apprehend the supplier. However, he was found absconding from his residence.

SP Kaushal said based on credible intelligence inputs indicating the likelihood of the accused attempting to flee abroad, a look out circular (LOC) was issued against him. On February 19, immigration authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, intercepted the accused while he was attempting to board a flight to Dubai. He was subsequently handed over to the Kullu Police team and brought to Bhuntar for further interrogation. Upon finding sufficient evidence of his involvement, he was formally arrested on February 20, under Section 29 of the NDPS Act. He is being produced before a court, and further investigation is underway to dismantle the broader supply chain.

In a separate operation on February 19, the Bhuntar police team conducted a raid at a residential premises in Bada Bhuin based on a reliable tip-off. During the search of the ground-floor accommodation occupied by tenant Arjan Masih (21), a resident of Ward No. 1, Forest Chowk Shamshi, Bhuntar, the police recovered 40 grams of heroin (chitta), Rs 4,500 in cash, an electronic weighing machine and a lighter.

An FIR under Section 21 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused, and procedural formalities have been completed. The SP stated that a detailed investigation was in progress to ascertain the source of supply, distribution channels and any inter-district or interstate nexus.

He reiterated that the police would continue to pursue zero tolerance against drug trafficking and urged people to cooperate by promptly sharing information about any suspicious or drug-related activities.
