The restoration of services through the Atal Tunnel has brought much-needed relief to Lahaul residents who rely on public transport for travelling between Keylong, Manali and Kullu.

Responding to public demand, the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) conducted a trial run of a 37-seater bus on Friday. After the trial proved successful, the authorities decided to officially resume operations from Monday.

According to HRTC officials, bus service will initially operate only during daytime hours, keeping in view the risk of black ice formation on the road. The decision aims to ensure passenger safety amid prevailing winter conditions.

Anshit Sharma, Regional Manager of the Keylong HRTC Depot, said bus from Keylong to Manali would depart at 10.30 am, while the bus from Kullu to Keylong would leave at 10.52 am. Future services would depend on the road and weather conditions, he said.

Udaipur-Keylong trial unsuccessful

Meanwhile, a trial run on the Udaipur–Keylong road did not succeed. Transport Corporation Inspector Shashi Kapoor reported that the bus could not proceed beyond Tojing Nala due to accumulated snow and icy road conditions. Narrow snow cuttings beyond Jahlma also created difficulties for vehicle passing.

The matter has been reported to the Regional Manager for further action.

Road repairs underway

According to BRO sources, problematic stretches on the Udaipur–Tandi road would be cleared soon to make the route fit for bus operations at the earliest between Keylong and Udaipur.

Sharma added that continuity of bus service would depend on favourable weather and road safety conditions.
