Mandi student murder: Himachal women’s panel seeks action; SFI stages protest at HPU
Siya, a first-year BBA student, was on her way to the college for her exams when she was attacked and brutally murdered by two bike-borne assailants
The Himachal Pradesh Commission for Women on Monday strongly condemned the murder of 19-year-old Siya Guleria in Mandi district and demanded strict action against the accused.
Commission Chairperson Vidya Negi, in a video message, said she had spoken to Mandi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar to review the situation. She directed the police to ensure stern action against those involved.
Meanwhile, the Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in Shimla, demanding strict action against the accused.
Addressing the protest, Yogi Singhania, Campus President, SFI, HPU, said Siya, a first-year BBA student, was on her way to the college for her exams when she was attacked and brutally murdered by two bike-borne assailants.
“This incident is extremely painful and clearly demonstrates the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. It has also been revealed that the accused was under the influence of alcohol and heroin, which further highlights the seriousness of drug-related issues in the state,” he said.
He said that it is clear that the growing drug menace in the state is not just a law and order issue, but a deeper socio-economic and political problem.
“Unemployment, growing youth disillusionment, and a lax approach to the drug trade have all compounded this issue. The drug mafia is openly destroying the future of young people. Therefore, the government must ensure stern action against the drug mafia in the state,” said Singhania.
