Nasha Nivaran panels hold first meetings in red zone panchayats
The meetings in Nurpur, Indora, Jawali and Fatehpur subdivisions were held under the supervision of local Subdivisional Police Officers and Station House Officers
Expediting the campaign against drug peddling and the fight against ‘chitta’, maiden meetings of the Nasha Nivaran Committees (NNCs), constituted by the Deputy Commissioner, were held yesterday evening in all 21 red zone gram panchayats.
The meetings in Nurpur, Indora, Jawali and Fatehpur subdivisions were held under the supervision of local Subdivisional Police Officers (SDPOs) and Station House Officers (SHOs). Nurpur SP Kulbhushan Verma and the Indora SDM attended the meetings in drug peddling hotspots in Chhanni and Milwan panchayats.
It is pertinent to mention that the two panchayats have plenty of drug smugglers and small peddlers and the Nurpur district police have mounted pressure on the drug mafia having interstate drug smuggling network during the past three years. A number of habitual offenders are either undergoing detention under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act or facing trial. The moveable and immovable properties of several notorious drug smugglers have also been confiscated and ordered to be frozen by the competent authority.
As per information, a particular community, originally hailing from Punjab, migrated to the interstate border area in Indora subdivision many decades back. After indulging in thefts and bootlegging, members of the community, including women, have switched to drug smuggling to earn easy money. Talking to The Tribune, SP Kulbhushan Verma said while interacting with local community in Chhanni and Milwan panchayats, villagers pledged to come forward and join the in state government’s fight against ‘chitta’ and drugs.
“The residents who attended these meetings last evening have raised the issue of lack of employment opportunities and playgrounds for youth,” he said.
