National Science Day marked at Palampur agricultural varsity

The College of Basic Sciences at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur, celebrated National Science Day yesterday, aligning with this year’s theme, “Women in Science – Catalysing Viksit Bharat.” The programme was attended by faculty, staff and students.

The event was graced by Vice-Chancellor AK Panda as the chief guest, while former VC and noted agricultural scientist Prof SK Sharma delivered the keynote address.

National Science Day is observed to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by CV Raman on February 28, 1928. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for this landmark discovery, marking India’s first Nobel in science.

Dean of Basic Sciences Dr Rajan Katoch highlighted the importance of this year’s theme, emphasising the transformative role of women in science, administration, space research, defence, information technology and higher education. He cited examples such as N Kalaiselvi, Director General of the CSIR, and encouraged young women to pursue careers in science and research. He reiterated the college’s commitment to strengthening basic sciences and promoting interdisciplinary research to address emerging agricultural and biological challenges.

Prof SK Sharma, in his keynote lecture, spoke about the challenges faced by women in scientific careers and stressed the need for inclusive policies, institutional support and adequate funding to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. He urged students and researchers to strive for innovation and excellence.

In his presidential address, Dr Panda underscored the crucial role of agricultural universities in transforming rural economies through science-based interventions. He emphasised translating laboratory research into field technologies, promoting agri-entrepreneurship, strengthening extension services and empowering farmers, youth and women.

The programme concluded with a collective resolve to advance scientific excellence, gender inclusivity, and grassroots innovation in line with the vision of a developed India.
