A training workshop for officers and employees in Shimla district regarding house listing and housing enumeration (HLO) in the first phase of the upcoming Census of India-2027 was inaugurated here on Sunday. Two batches would undergo training till tomorrow and then again from March 5 to 7.
Director, Census Operations Directorate, Deep Shikha Sharma, said that the Census-2027 would be India’s first such fully digital exercise. “Data collection will be done through mobile phone apps and web portals, making the process more transparent, quick and effective,” she added.
Deep Shikha urged the officials concerned to complete the work within the stipulated time. “Censuses in India are conducted after every 10 years. After 2011, the next census in the country was proposed for 2021. However, it was postponed due to Covid-19 pandemic. Now, the census will be held this year in two phases,” she added.
She said, “In the first phase, house listing and housing enumeration will be conducted in the state from May 12 to June 11. The second phase is proposed for February 2027. However, the HLO is expected to be completed in snow-covered areas in September this year. Besides, self-enumeration facilities will also be provided to people. The portal will be activated 15 days before the scheduled date. Any citizen can log in and enter his information. People will then be provided with a self-enumeration ID, to be verified by the enumerator. Also, at the ground level, the enumerators and the supervisors will carry out the work through a mobile phone app,” she added.
Deputy Commissioner, Shimla, Anupam Kashyap said that the census was not only a population count but also a cornerstone of nation-building. “It is also a test of administrative credibility and transparency in governance. Therefore, every employee and officer involved in this work must work honestly and in accordance with the established standards. The district administration will always provide all possible assistance for this task,” he added.
