One of 7 inmates in Kaithu, Kanda jails dealing with depression
One out of every seven inmates imprisoned in the District Jail, Kaithu, and the Model Central Jail, Kanda, in Shimla district are suffering from depression. As per the jail authorities, during various medical camps, it has been found that the inmates, who were imprisoned for a long time, have shown symptoms of depression. Most of the inmates who are suffering from depression are between 35 and 40 years of age.
Recently, the district legal authority had organised a psychiatric camp for inmates that had been imprisoned in Kaithu and Kanda jails. During the camp, counselling of around 70 inmates, who had shown symptoms of depression, was conducted.
An official of the jail said efforts were being made to save the prisoners from falling a prey to depression. “Depression is also being cured through yoga. For this, the jail staff has been trained to teach yoga to the inmates. Yoga helps in releasing stress, it is a good way to cure depression”,” the official added.
As per the Directorate of Prisons and Correctional Services, Kanda jail has a total of 532 inmates, including 514 males. However, the jail has a capacity to accommodate 438 inmates. Similarly, Kaithu jail has 289 inmates, including 281 males. However, the jail has a capacity to accommodate 183 inmates.
