Padma Shri awardee stresses need for adopting technology in agriculture

The future of Indian agriculture lies in scientific advancement, technology adoption and active participation of the youth, said Dr Prem Lal Gautam, a Padam Shri awardee and distinguished alumnus of Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, during a visit to the institution.

Gautam reflected on his professional journey and highlighted key milestones and challenges that shaped his illustrious career. He interacted with the staff of the Regional Horticultural Research and Training Station, Sharbo, and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kinnaur.

During a visit to Kinnaur to receive the Himachal Gaurav Award, Gautam visited the Regional Horticultural Research and Training Station, Sharbo, and the KVK, Kinnaur. Pramod Kumar, Associate Director of the station, along with other staff members accorded him a warm welcome.

An interactive session was organised with BSc (Horticulture) students undertaking the Rural Agricultural Work Experience Programme at the Sharbo station. Gautam shared valuable insights into farmers’ rights, sustainable agricultural development, rural empowerment and the importance of innovation-driven growth in the farming sector.

Gautam also underlined the potential of horticulture in enhancing farm income, ensuring nutritional security and strengthening livelihoods. He encouraged students to adopt a broader vision by integrating modern technologies, climate-resilient practices, entrepreneurship and value addition into agriculture. He urged students to become job creators rather than seekers and lead rural transformation through innovation and scientific farming.
