The Congress high command’s decision to give preference to a young party leader over senior, established figures for the Rajya Sabha seat marks a generational shift that could augur well for the ruling party in the near future.

The nomination of Anurag Sharma (46), currently president of the Kangra District Congress Committee (DCC), has sent a strong signal that the party is open to bringing in young blood rather than rewarding senior leaders who have held prominent positions for decades.

The party leadership eventually approved Sharma’s name. A loyalist of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, he had earlier been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the party in Kangra, the largest and politically most significant district of the state. Party sources said it was Rahul Gandhi who was keen on giving the opportunity to a dedicated party worker who does not come from an established political family.

While the names of several leaders from Himachal as well as outside the state were doing the rounds, few had anticipated that Sharma would eventually find favour with the high command. What weighed in his favour was his image as a grass-roots leader with organisational experience, even though his political stature cannot match that of stalwarts such as former Union Minister Anand Sharma, former MP and state Congress president Pratibha Singh and former minister Kaul Singh Thakur.

Some political observers argue that a senior leader capable of effectively raising Himachal-related issues in Parliament should have been chosen. However, the move to field Sharma has largely been welcomed within Congress circles in the state.

The selection has not only struck the right chord in Kangra, helping balance caste and regional considerations, but has also conveyed a strong message that loyalty, dedication and hard work can bring rewards for young party workers.

“It is very demotivating for young leaders to see the same old faces being preferred every time, whether for Assembly ticket, ministerial positions or other posts, whenever the party forms a government,” a Congress leader said, adding, “If senior leaders refuse to step aside, why would younger workers remain motivated?”

Many party leaders point out that veterans such as Anand Sharma, Pratibha Singh and Kaul Singh Thakur have already received significant opportunities over the past four decades. Anand Sharma has served four terms in the Rajya Sabha, while Pratibha Singh has been elected to the Lok Sabha three times and also served as the state Congress president. Her political standing has also been closely associated with the stature of her late husband, Virbhadra Singh, who served six terms as Chief Minister. Their son, Vikramaditya Singh, is currently a minister in the state government.

Similarly, Kaul Singh Thakur has served as a minister in successive Congress governments. In the 2022 Assembly elections, both he and his daughter Champa Thakur were given party tickets, and she currently heads the Mandi District Congress Committee.

The desire expressed by Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandil to be sent to the Rajya Sabha was also viewed by some as an attempt to facilitate the political launch of his son.

The decision to field Anurag Sharma, a relatively young and dedicated party worker, appears to signal a changing phase in the Congress where pedigree and stature alone may no longer determine political advancement, a move that could enthuse grass-roots workers across the organisation.
