Mandi, August 11

Mohammad Sultan Alam, a PhD scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, has adopted 12 students of Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS) in Kamand.

Mohammad’s gesture to help these needy children has earned him appreciation. Locals say he is an inspiration for all. “He is funding the education of those whose parents struggle to make ends meet,” they said.

Sushil Arora, principal, GSSS, Kamand, said Mohammad Sultan had deposited Rs 6,625 as their school fee. The parents said they were unable to express their happiness. Mohammad was a godsend, they said. Talking to The Tribune, Mohammad Sultan said: “Due to financial constraints, a large number of people do not send their wards to school. These children are so talented and the sad part is that their parents do not have the means to even provide basic things to them. It pains me. I have always wanted to do my bit for society.”

“Without education, we cannot move ahead in our life. Education empowers a person. So, I decided to help these students get higher education and scale greater heights,” he said.

His father is also a teacher and his younger brother has joined IIT-Mandi.

The PhD scholar in the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering at IIT-Mandi has used his scholarship amount to pay the fee of students.
