Police Commemoration Day was celebrated in a unique manner at police training college at Daroh in Kangra district today. Recruits of Himachal police undergoing training in the college pooled in money to honour and provide financial support to the unsung heroes of Army and police from the district.
An amount of Rs 1 lakh was distributed to widows of four martyrs of Army and police. The recruits also resolved to visit the families of Army and police martyrs in vicinity of their homes to instill a feeling of inclusiveness in them.
Commandant at police training college Saumya Sambasivan, while talking The Tribune, said that the whole idea was to motivate young recruits so that they take care of at least one family whose children have made a sacrifice for the nation. They have been asked to visit the families of martyrs in and around their villages or towns every year when they go on leave or a festival and help them not just financially but emotionally.
“The recruits would make the families of martyrs comfortable. While it has been a tradition in the Army to help out the families of martyrs the families of police martyrs do not get that attention. With the recruits visiting their families I feel the families of police martyrs would also feel being part of a large police family”, she said.
Saumya further said at today’s function held in police training college, Daroh, families of four martyrs were honoured and provided financial help. Those honoured were Bablesh Kumari, wife of Anil Rana, an Army martyr from Thakurdwara village in Kangra district. Anil Rana died in Leh in a landmine attack. His son is studying Mount Carmel School. The police recruits will bear the entire fee burden of the child for one year.
The kin of other martyrs honoured were Pradeep Singh, son of Bramh Singh, a resident of Kundian tehsil in Kangra district. Bramh Singh, who was serving as Sub Inspector in Haryana police, died during labour unrest in Faridabad.
Sangeeta, wife of Sanjay Kumar, was also honoured. Sanjay Kumar was posted as a constable in traffic wing of Himachal police at police station Baijnath in Kangra district. In 2012 he was mowed down under a car by criminals.
Meena, wife of Mast Ram, a head constable in Himachal police was also honoured. Mast Ram, a resident of Jaisinghpur, was posted in police station Palampur in the year 1997. On January 24, 1997 he along with others tried to apprehend a gang of dacoits who were trying to flee after committing a dacoity in Thakurdwara. Mast Ram displayed exemplary courage and devotion to get hold of the offenders. To free themselves from his grip, one of the accused fired upon Mast Ram and he died of the injuries.
