Push for sustainable agriculture at farmers’ fair in Mandi district

A farmers’ fair promoting sustainable agriculture practices was organised by the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Mandi, at Disti gram panchayat in Chachyot tehsil of Mandi district, with a focus on the Indian natural farming system.

The event drew participation from around 470 farmers, signalling a growing interest in eco-friendly and cost-effective agricultural methods. The primary objective was to raise awareness about natural farming and encourage a reduction in the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides.

Agricultural experts at the fair provided detailed guidance on key natural farming techniques, including Jeevamrit, Ghanjeevamrit and Beejamrit, explaining both their preparation and application. They highlighted the advantages of these methods, such as lower input costs, improved soil fertility and the production of healthier food.

Farmers were also briefed on the latest Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for major crops such as wheat, maize and turmeric, enabling them to make informed decisions and secure better returns for their produce.

Experts said natural farming was not only environmentally sustainable but also a profitable alternative for the future of agriculture. Farmers were encouraged to adopt these practices to enhance long-term productivity and resilience.

The event was attended by several dignitaries and officials, including HP SC/ST Commission Chairman Lal Singh Kaushal, district-level Farmer Advisory Committee member Heer Singh Thakur, 20-Point Programme member Deep Mani, ATMA Mandi Deputy Project Director Sanjay Kumar Thakur, agricultural expert Dr Hitender Thakur, SMS Agriculture Gagan Pradeep Saini, Executive Engineer (Electricity) Sumesh Chauhan, SDO (Jal Shakti) Kishore Lal, Horticulture Development Officer Dr Kajal Sharma and Veterinary Officer Dr Rakesh Sharma, among others.

The fair concluded with a strong endorsement of natural farming as a viable pathway towards sustainable agriculture and improved livelihoods for farmers in the region.
