Himachal PWD Minister urges Nitin Gadkari to continue support for infrastructure projects
Stresses need for long-term, sustainable road network in Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vikramaditya Singh today called on Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi and sought continued support of the Central Government, timely release of funds and flexibility in norms for various ongoing projects of key roads, bridges and tunnels in the state so that the work could progress without delay.
Vikramaditya told Gadkari that there was need for a long-term, sustainable road network in the state to facilitate local residents, farmers, horticulturists, tourists and the defence forces alike. He urged the Union Minister to treat the Bhubu-Jot tunnel and its approach road as a priority project and declare this entire stretch a national highway in view of its strategic, economic and tourism potential.
He said that the tunnel would provide an all-weather alternative link between Jogindernagar and Kullu via the Lug valley, substantially reducing the distance and travel time between Pathankot, Jogindernagar, Mandi and Kullu and easing congestion on existing routes.
Besides, Vikramaditya also took up several important bridge and road projects in different parts of the state with Gadkari. He expressed gratitude to the Central Government for approvals granted so far and requested Gadkari that additional proposals for the widening, strengthening and improvement of hill roads as well as for slope protection, tunnels and bypasses be cleared expeditiously.
Vikramaditya also conveyed the state’s appreciation for policy initiatives such as support for ropeway projects and the relaxation of some norms for hilly terrain, which would help in diversifying transport options and reducing pressure on narrow roads.
Gadkari appreciated the detailed presentation of the state’s priorities and assured Vikramaditya that the concerns of Himachal Pradesh would be examined sympathetically at the appropriate level. He added that the Union Government was committed to improving road and bridge infrastructure in all hill and border states and the genuine requirements of Himachal Pradesh would receive due consideration.
