After conducting a ground assessment on Darcha-Shinkula road up to Shinkula pass on February 26, the Lahaul and Spiti police issued a fresh travel advisory yesterday warning that the route remains extremely hazardous despite being restored for limited movement.
The highway, which had been blocked following heavy snowfall on January 23, has now been reopened strictly for 4x4 vehicles. Authorities clarified that the road surface continues to pose significant risks due to heavy icing and multiple slippery stretches along the route.
According to the advisory, the patrolling team found the area peaceful, but cautioned travellers about dangerous driving conditions, especially the presence of black ice. Officials have categorically prohibited the movement of 2x4 (2WD) vehicles, stating that such vehicles are highly likely to get stranded or meet with accidents under current conditions.
Movement is permitted only for 4x4 vehicles equipped with anti-skid snow chains and driven by experienced mountain drivers. The police emphasised that early morning and late evening travel should be strictly avoided as black ice formation is at its peak during these hours, significantly increasing the risk of skidding.
Travellers have also been advised to carry essential supplies, including adequate fuel, tow ropes, emergency repair tools, warm clothing and sufficient dry food. Authorities stressed that preparedness is crucial due to the remote terrain and unpredictable weather conditions in the high-altitude region.
Lahaul and Spiti Superintendent of Police Shivani Mehla reiterated that public safety remains the top priority. She urged commuters to cooperate with police personnel deployed along the route and strictly follow instructions issued by the local administration.
