Rs 294.1 crore approved for landslide mitigation on Kiratpur-Manali NH
Major boost to slope stability at Thalout in Mandi
In a significant infrastructure push for Himachal Pradesh, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced the approval of Rs 294.1 crore for long-term landslide mitigation and slope stabilisation works on Kiratpur-Manali National Highway-3 in the Pandoh–Kullu section at Thalout in Mandi district. He shared this information through his official social media handles Facebook and X last evening.
The sanctioned amount will be utilised for permanent corrective measures at identified landslide-prone locations along this crucial stretch of the Kiratpur–Manali corridor. According to Gadkari, the project aims to significantly enhance slope stability, ensure safer travel and strengthen the resilience of this vital national highway corridor that serves as the lifeline of the state.
NH-3 is strategically important as it connects key destinations such as Kullu, Manali, Lahaul-Spiti and further extends towards Leh. The Thalout stretch, in particular, has been a persistent trouble spot, witnessing repeated landslides during heavy rainfall, especially in the monsoon. These disruptions have not only endangered commuters, but also affected tourism, local livelihoods and the movement of essential goods.
Gadkari emphasised that the approved works would involve modern engineering solutions, including advanced slope protection systems and reinforced concrete structures at identified hotspots. The goal is to provide a long-term and sustainable solution rather than temporary repairs. He highlighted that strengthening infrastructure in hilly terrains like Himachal Pradesh is a priority under the Centre’s broader highway development initiatives, ensuring that critical corridors remain operational even during adverse weather conditions.
The Thalout area has faced severe challenges over the past year, particularly after devastating natural calamities that caused extensive damage to road infrastructure across the state. Notably, a four-lane tunnel near Thalout has remained closed for nearly eight months due to landslide-related issues, forcing traffic to be diverted to the old route and leading to frequent congestion.
Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur welcomed the Centre’s decision and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and minister Gadkari for the financial approval. He said the project would prove to be a milestone in restoring and strengthening Himachal’s infrastructure, particularly given the road’s importance for tourism and strategic connectivity.
With the approval now in place, construction work is expected to begin after necessary formalities, bringing relief to commuters and reinforcing one of Himachal Pradesh’s most critical highway links.
