At least 15 families were forced to leave a multi-storey building in the Chalaunthi area of Shimla during the night after cracks appeared, officials said on Saturday.

Residents claimed that the cracks had started developing a few days ago and alleged that ongoing four-lane construction work nearby may have contributed.

Locals also said they had informed NHAI officials about the issue.

As the cracks deepened on Friday, the residents vacated the building. District administration officials visited the site to assess the situation.
