Sardar Patel University, Mandi, has secured membership of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi. The membership will take effect from April 1 and the university has been placed in the North Zone of the AIU.
The approval was formally communicated by the office of the Secretary General of the AIU, recognising the university’s academic growth, institutional development and commitment to quality higher education.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Lalit Kumar Awasthi said the AIU was a premier national body representing universities across India and played a key role in academic coordination, policy dialogue, degree equivalence, research collaboration and the promotion of sports and cultural activities at national and international levels. He described the membership as an important step in SPU’s journey towards academic excellence and greater national and international integration within the higher education framework.
Prof Awasthi said as a newly established university, SPU students had earlier faced technical and procedural difficulties while filling national-level application forms, as the university’s name was not reflected in dropdown lists for admissions, competitive examinations, fellowships, scholarships and academic registrations.
“With the AIU membership, SPU is now formally recognised within the national academic framework. Students will no longer face such issues while applying for admissions, fellowships, scholarships, higher studies and other academic opportunities across India,” he said.
Calling the development a proud moment for the university, the Vice-Chancellor said the recognition reflected the sustained efforts of faculty, staff and students in strengthening academic standards and institutional credibility. He added that the membership would open new avenues for collaboration, research, student mobility and academic exchange.
With this development, SPU will participate in AIU’s academic initiatives, inter-university programmes, sports competitions, research networks and policy forums, enhancing its national visibility and expanding opportunities for students and faculty.
