SFI seeks rollback of HPU fee hike, restoration of SCA polls
HPU fee hike and suspension of SCA elections draw student protest, with activists warning of intensified agitation
The Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) unit of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) today staged a protest outside the Department of Law on the university campus, demanding a rollback of the recent fee hikes and the restoration of Student Central Association (SCA) elections.
Addressing the protest, SFI activist Rohit said education at HPU was being pushed beyond the reach of ordinary students due to continuous increases in fees.
“Along with academic fees, charges are being increased across various sectors, including examination fees, hostel fees, bus fares and thesis submission fees,” he said.
He said HPU, being a public educational institution, should focus on making education accessible and affordable rather than increasing the financial burden on students. “The continuous fee hikes are affecting students from poor and middle-class families the most,” he said.
Rohit also stressed the importance of student union elections in ensuring democratic representation and participation on the campus. “SCA elections should be immediately reinstated to ensure student participation in decisions concerning them. The university administration’s failure to restore student union elections is an attempt to undermine the democratic rights of students,” he said.
The SFI warned that it would intensify its agitation if the university authorities failed to concede its demands.
