Gauri Khan restores her family’s old home in Dalhousie and design is inspired by memories
Gauri Khan has worked on a special design project that is close to her heart. The film producer and interior designer has redesigned a family home in Dalhousie called The Chestnut Grove. The six-bedroom property belongs to her maternal uncle, Tejinder Tiwari.
This home is not just another project for Gauri. She spent many summers here as a child with her family and cousins. The house holds many memories for her. After careful renovation, it has now been opened for luxury stays.
Gauri’s cousin Rustam Tiwari told, HT Lifestyle, that the property was bought in 1933 by their great-grandfather Suraj Bhan Tiwari. The house covers about 8,000 square feet and is located in the heart of Dalhousie. It was the main place where Gauri spent her childhood holidays.
A home passed down through generations
The Chestnut Grove has been in the family for many years. Gauri worked closely with Rustam on the interiors. The aim was to keep the old charm of the house while adding modern comforts.
The property is now available for private bookings, mainly for families or groups. Room prices range from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per night, depending on the season. The full villa can be booked for Rs 1.2 lakh per night.
Inside the house
The home is surrounded by tall trees and greenery. The living room has large glass windows that let in plenty of natural light. There is comfortable seating and a big fireplace that makes the space warm and cosy.
The house has different types of rooms, including garden rooms, a king suite and an attic suite. The bedrooms feature wooden ceilings, stone details and soft beds. The dining area has a skylight that keeps the space bright throughout the year.
Design inspired by memories
Rustam said Gauri was involved in every step of the project. She designed the home keeping family memories in mind.
The idea was to make the house feel warm, comfortable and welcoming, just like it did during their childhood holidays.
