SHIMLA, February 11

Residents of the capital town will no longer have to bear with defective streetlights as the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) is looking for a new company for designing, manufacturing, installation as well as the maintenance of 15,000 streetlights across the town at the cost of Rs 4.82 crore. For this, the corporation has also invited fresh tenders.

WHAT MAYOR SAYS

The new company will also issue a helpline number through which the people will be able to register complaints of defective street lights in their area.

Earlier, the corporation had handed over the tender of street lights to Energy Efficiency Service Limited (EESL) company. The tenure of EESL company’s tender is set to expire this month and the corporation authorities have issued fresh tenders for the same. This time the corporation is looking for a new company.

Earlier, the issue was also raised during the monthly meeting of SMC in January where councillors complained of defective streetlights in their wards. The councillors, during the meeting, had said there are many defective streetlights in their wards which have not been replaced for months.

Talking to The Tribune, Mayor Surinder Chauhan said that the company had handed over the work of maintenance of streetlights to another company named Florida. He said the main concern of the corporation was with EESL company and not with the other company.

He added that the corporation wants that whichever company takes up the project, should be responsible for installation as well as the maintenance of streetlights. However, he added that EESL company is also invited to participate for tendering but they would have to install as well as maintain the streetlights all by themselves.

The Mayor added that with this, the residents will no longer have to face inconvenience while walking on link roads and streets of the town at night.

Apart from this, the corporation is also going to fix 700 streetlights in the town at a cost of Rs 11.67 lakh, for which it had already floated tender.
