Shimla police to target drug kingpins, dismantle supply chains: SSP
Police to recruit 42 traffic police personnel who will be deployed across town to ensure smooth traffic movement
Aiming to eradicate the drug menace from Shimla, the district police will focus on backward and forward linkages to dismantle drug supply chains and arrest drug kingpins and suppliers operating from outside the state.
Addressing the media, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shimla, Gaurav Singh, said the focus would be on the prevention and detection of crime, and stern action would be taken against drug peddlers. “The police will work on both the demand and supply sides, under which drug kingpins operating from outside the state will be targeted. The police will also focus on arresting drug peddlers and suppliers through backward linkages.
Furthermore, emphasis will be laid on financial investigations, under which properties acquired by kingpins and peddlers using drug money will be seized. Action will also be taken against repeat offenders who have been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act multiple times,” he said.
Along with this, the police will engage various stakeholders, including non-government organisations, to spread awareness against drug abuse, especially among the youth. Efforts will also be made to reintegrate drug addicts into mainstream society, the SSP said.
He added that the police would also focus on improving the safety and security of women in the district by reducing crimes against women.
Furthermore, the SSP shared his plans to address traffic congestion and frequent traffic jams in Shimla. He said the district police have decided to recruit 42 traffic police personnel who will be deployed across the town to ensure smooth traffic movement.
He stated that traffic congestion remains a major challenge for Shimla, as it is one of the most popular hill stations and attracts tourists from across the country. “Due to limited road infrastructure and a high inflow of vehicles, especially during the peak tourist season, traffic jams occur at several bottlenecks in the town. To find an effective solution, a meeting was held with officials to discuss measures to reduce congestion and improve traffic management in Shimla,” he said.
The SSP further said it was observed that several posts in the traffic wing were lying vacant, and a decision was taken to fill these vacancies, for which approval has been received from the police headquarters. “Special arrangements will also be made to ensure smooth traffic movement during peak tourist seasons,” he added.
