Tension flared at The Mall, Shimla, when several shopkeepers allegedly clashed with a Shimla Municipal Corporation (MC) team during an anti-encroachment drive. The civic body officials had reached Lower Bazaar and The Mall to remove unauthorised extensions, but resistance from shopkeepers soon escalated into a physical confrontation. Some traders allegedly pushed, abused and assaulted the officials.

Police intervened to control the situation and escorted the MC team to safety. A video of the altercation later circulated on social media and one shopkeeper has been booked in connection with the incident.

Condemning the attack, Municipal Commissioner Bhupinder Attri said strict action would be taken against the culprits. He noted that despite repeated warnings, many shopkeepers continue to extend displays onto public walkways, obstructing pedestrians and tourists. The MC has vowed to continue the encroachment removal drive with police support to ensure smooth and lawful operations.
