The UGC Centre for Australian and New Zealand Studies at Himachal Pradesh University is currently hosting Courtney Collins, an Asialink resident who is a creative writer and a film producer. In her three-week visit to the Centre, she will conduct workshops, deliver lectures and interact with several writers and authors from Shimla. On Friday, she screened two short films produced by her in the Visual Arts Studio at HPU. The event was organised by the UGC Centre for Australian and New Zealand Studies in collaboration with the Department of Visual Arts, HPU, Shimla. Centre Director Prof Neelima Kanwar deliberated on how these films showcased the struggle for protection of cultural heritage of indigenous community of Australia. Prof Him Chatterjee, Chairperson, Department of Visual Arts, proposed the vote of thanks and elaborated on the importance of films. 

600 take part in HPU youth fest 

As many as 600 students from 45 colleges participated in the Group-II Youth festival of Himachal Pradesh University that concluded at Government Degree College, Seema (Rohru) in Shimla district on Thursday evening. Education Minister Suresh Bhardwaj, who was the chief guest, said Rs 2 crore were provided under RUSA for construction of the college building to facilitate students and a commerce lab has also been sanctioned. "The thrust of the government is on quality education and linking it with employment," he said. Urging students to actively participate in co-curricular activities, he said the main objective of organising the youth festivals was to encourage art and culture and explore these potentials among youth.

Workshop on food adulteration

A national workshop on food adulteration will be organised at Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Government College, Paonta Sahib, on September 27 and 28. It is sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Delhi, under the Star College Scheme initiated in 2008 and emphasises on improving knowledge and skills of teachers, providing access to specialised infrastructure and consumables, to improve hands on training and industrial exposure as well as individual research projects for undergraduate students. Under this scheme, the college obtained the financial support of Rs 63 lakh for three years for three departments - botany, zoology and chemistry - to nurture excellence in undergraduate science education for the development of college. Nearly 95 delegates from various colleges of the state are expected to attend the workshop.

Placement Seminar at St Bede’s College

The placement cell of St Bede's college on Friday organised a seminar by AIESEC. Shantanu Balyan, head expansions development; Saatvik Srivastava, head finance and business development; Arun Sharma, manager, expansions development; and Shailesh, team leader, expansions development, informed students about international internship programmes. They talked about how their projects aligned with the sustainable development goals of the United Nations. Diksha, a student of St Bede's College who did her internship in Russia through AIESEC, shared her experience. Shantanu also shared his personal experience regarding his six-month internship in Egypt. In the end, Saatvik informed students about the expenses of the programme. Nearly 60 students got their names enrolled for the internship.

Speech Day of Auckland House School

The Middle Section Speech Day of Auckland House School was held on Friday. It was presided over by Anu Sharma, Principal, Shimla Public School. The children performed a variety of dances, plays and songs. The musical performance "The Flowers of the Nations" enthralled the audience. The Hindi play "Paani Aa Gaya" laid emphasis on the importance of conserving water. A brief report of the school was given by Director Principal S John, highlighting the achievements of the students throughout the year. Prizes for outstanding performances in academics and art were given out. The programme concluded with the National Anthem.
