Snow likely on Dec 20, state awaits relief from prolonged dry spell

Himachal Pradesh is likely to get some respite from the prolonged dry spell, with higher reaches of the state expected to receive a fresh spell of snowfall and rainfall on December 20 and 21.

According to the State Meteorological Department, light snowfall and rain are likely at isolated places in the higher hills of Kullu, Kangra, Kinnaur, Chamba and Lahaul and Spiti. The rest of the state is expected to remain dry during this period. Both minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to drop by 3°C to 4°C following the change in weather.

The Met department has also issued a yellow warning for dense fog during the early morning hours on December 18 and 19 in parts of the Balh Valley in Mandi district and areas around the Bhakra Dam reservoir in Bilaspur.

Meanwhile, weather conditions remained largely dry across the state over the past 24 hours. Minimum temperatures were near normal at most places and were 2°C to 5°C above normal at a few locations, ranging between minus 6°C and 11°C. Maximum temperatures, too, remained above normal by 3°C to 7°C in most parts of the state, ranging from 8°C to 27°C.

Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 11.4°C, while Dharamsala registered 9.6°C. Manali recorded 3.9°C, Kangra 5.6°C, Mandi 4.6°C, Bilaspur 5.5°C, Hamirpur 4.2°C, Kalpa 3.4°C, Sunder Nagar 3.5°C, Bhuntar 2.6°C, Una 7.5°C, Nahan 9.8°C, Kufri 9.2°C, Paonta Sahib 9°C, Narkanda 7.1°C and Reckong Peo 5.5°C.

Solan was the hottest place in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 28°C, while Kukumseri village in Lahaul and Spiti district remained the coldest, with the mercury dipping to minus 6°C.
