In this era of increasing vehicular traffic, road safety has become a matter of serious concern. Negligence, over-speeding and drunken driving are among the leading causes of road accidents, which claim hundreds of lives in the country every day, said SP, Balbir Thakur while addressing students on road safety at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Memorial Government Postgraduate College, Hamirpur, on Monday. The college’s Road Safety Club organised the programme.

He said that many young people ride two-wheelers without wearing helmets, often resulting in life-threatening injuries. There had been numerous instances where helmets had saved lives, he added. He cautioned students against falling prey to drug peddlers, as drug abuse had emerged as a major threat to the future of the youth and the nation.

He said that a disciplined life and abstaining from harmful habits were essential for a happy and successful life. The students later carried out an awareness rally in the Anu area to sensitise people about strict compliance with traffic rules.

The SP said road safety was a priority for the state government and the Police Department.
