A substantial rise in the registration of FIRs under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was witnessed in the Nurpur police district jurisdiction last year. The Nurpur police had registered 96 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 175 peddlers last year. It had registered 79 cases and arrested 134 peddlers in 2024.
Besides, the police arrested 11 habitual offenders indulging in drug smuggling several times after getting bail from judicial courts. The previous BJP government had created Nurpur police district in 2022 after a spurt in interstate drug smuggling in the border areas of Kangra.
The police recovered 1.757 kg of heroin (chitta) from drug peddlers last year, almost in similar quantity that was seized in 2024. Besides, the police seized immovable and immovable properties worth Rs 30.53 lakh of drug peddlers and also recovered stolen articles worth Rs 24.91 lakh from the possession of the theft accused during the same period. The police registered 23 FIRs and issued challans to 616 transport vehicles and land excavation machinery engaged in illegal mining activities last year. A fine totalling Rs 58.10 lakh was recovered from illegal miners and 336 vehicles engaged in illegal mining in various rivulets in Nurpur were seized.
SP Kulbhushan Verma told The Tribune that since Nurpur is a border area prone to interstate drug smuggling and illegal mining, the police had adopted a professional approach in curbing these activities. He added that the police were committed to making the region drug free and strict instructions had been issued to field officials to work in this direction vigorously.
Verma said that to stop criminal activities, the police had intensified night patrolling and strengthened women and cyber security. He added that for better traffic management, police vehicles equipped with latest surveillance technology had been pressed into service for highway patrolling from 32 Meel to Milwan.
The SP urged people to be vigilant and share credible inputs of drug peddling and other illegal activities in their areas with the local police.
