State vying for top spot in literacy, says minister

SHIMLA: India has made a rapid progress in the field of education and Himachal, which is second to Kerala in literacy, is vying for the top place, Education Minister Suresh Bhardwaj said today.

India has made a rapid progress in the field of education and Himachal, which is second to Kerala in literacy, is vying for the top place, Education Minister Suresh Bhardwaj said today.

Speaking at a national conference on “issues and challenges” in higher education, organised by the Himachal Pradesh College Teachers Association, Bhardwaj said there were 800 universities in the country and India was emerging as a leading nation in respect of education.

Education, culture and civilization occupied an important place in Himachal and a large number of people from Himachal were working in high positions in the government. He assured of looking into the demands of the association and also released a souvenir.

President of the association Dharam Vir Dharwala, vice-president, Ram Lal, Vice-Chancellor of APG Shimla University, Prof Romesh Chowdhary, former Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University, Prof Sunil Gupta, teachers and retired teachers of colleges were present.
