A first-year student of BTech (computer sciences) attempted suicide at JP University of Information Technology, Waknaghat, around 9.45 pm on Wednesday by jumping from the balcony of the ninth floor of his hostel building.
He was rushed to the IGMC, Shimla, for treatment where his condition is stated to be critical, confirmed SP, Solan, Abishek S.
A police team rushed to the university around 11.20 pm after receiving information. “As per the preliminary police probe, the student, who hails from Mandi, was in a state of intoxication and was highly disoriented when the incident occurred. He suffered a bout of extreme hunger which is a typical symptom of intoxication due to drugs consumption,” opined the SP.
When he approached the fellow students for some eatables, he was told that the mess had closed, but they offered him biscuits. He, however, jumped off the balcony of the ninth floor even as fellow students tried to stop him.
“The statement of the victim will be recorded once his condition improves. Since the university administration failed to apprise the police of the incident, the authorities have been reprimanded and directed not to delay giving such information in the future,” informed the SP.
It was due to a random call received by the police that they rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation last night. A protest erupted at the campus as students came out of their rooms and started sloganeering against the university management after the incident.
The incident has exposed how students have easy access to drugs inside the university campus.
An MBA fourth semester student of Shoolini University had committed suicide at his rented accommodation at Solan on March 28 for being placed at a paltry salary at the university by a placement agency. The university management was booked for abetment of suicide exposing the gap between promise and delivery to the students for placements.
