Dharamsala, July 1

Congress workers led by former HPCC president and head of campaign committee of party for Assembly elections, Sukhvinder Sukhu today put up an impressive show of strength in Dharamsala as the party organized a protest against the constable recruitment scam and Agnipath scheme of the Union government.

About 2,000 Congress workers from various parts of Kangra district gathered at community hall in Kotwali market in Dharamsala and marched to Kachehri crossing raising slogans against the BJP government in the state. The presence of such a large number of Congress workers on the road and their vehicles parked on roadsides led to traffic jams in the city.

Congress flags were put up along the roads. The posters of Sukhu dominated the entire protest though many other Congress leaders from district, including former minister and AICC secretary Sudhir Sharma, AICC secretary RS Bali, Kangra MLA and working president of party Pawan Kajal and many office bearers of party and former MLAs were present.

The show of strength today was even bigger than what party could manage during the first visit of new HPCC president Pratibha Singh. Sources here said that most of the supporters who came for the rally were his loyalists whom he had given positions in the party.

Sukhu, while addressing the protest rally, alleged that the present government was lax in probing the constable recruitment scam. Due to this no action had been taken against any senior police officials who were responsible for the paper leak. About 2 lakh youth in the state had applied for the post of constables. These youth were now feeling cheated.

Leaking of papers for recruitment in government departments has become routine in the present government. Apart from that of constable recruitment, papers of many other recruitment exams had been leaked. The CM had announced that a CBI inquiry would be marked into the constable recruitment scam. However, till date no formal request has been made to the CBI, he alleged.

Sukhu also flayed the Agnipath scheme of the union government. He said that Kangra was a land of martyrs and thousands from the district had laid down their life while protecting the country. The union government has disrespected the martyrdom of Kangra youth by announcing Agniveer scheme which was meant to do away with the pension for soldiers in Indian army. The people of Kangra would give a befitting reply to BJP in the forthcoming Assembly elections for implementing Agniveer scheme.

Sukhu said the Congress would work towards implementing the old pension scheme when voted to power.
