The state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, is taking strict measures to protect children and youth from drug abuse, said Sunil Sharma Bittu, political advisor to the Chief Minister, while addressing students at the annual prize distribution and Children’s Day function at Government Senior Secondary School Matahani near here on Friday.

Bittu said Chief Minister Sukhu would launch the “Chitta-Free Himachal” campaign from the Ridge Maidan in Shimla on November 15. He said the campaign aims to completely eliminate the consumption and smuggling of harmful drugs like Chitta, charas and afeem.

“Every citizen of Himachal should support the state government and the Chief Minister in this battle against Chitta,” Bittu urged.

He also called on teachers and parents to take special care of children, inspiring them to move forward in life with positivity by instilling good values. Wishing all children and teachers a Happy Children’s Day, Bittu praised the legacy of the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who dedicated his birthday to the welfare of children.

Bittu awarded students who had excelled in academics, sports, cultural activities and other fields.

Earlier, Principal Anju Chopra presented the annual report of the school. Sanjeev Sharma, president of the School Management Committee (SMC) and other dignitaries also shared their thoughts with the students, while students performed cultural programmes.
