A team of health officials visited the Thachi area in Seraj, Mandi district, on Friday to detect the cases of mumps.

The officials received information that there was a mumps outbreak in the area. Health experts said it was a contagious disease caused by a virus that passed through saliva, nasal secretions and contact. “The condition primarily affects the salivary glands. There are three sets of salivary glands on each side of the face. The most common symptom is swelling in the salivary glands,” they said.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Mandi, Jeevanand Chauhan said the people of area were examined, but no such case was reported. He said the people were told about the symptoms.

The Chief Medical Officer said vaccination could prevent mumps.

“Most infants and children are vaccinated for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) at the same time. The first MMR shot is generally given between the age of 12 and 15 months.

The second shot is given between four and six years. With two doses, the mumps vaccine is approximately 88 per cent effective,” Chauhan said.
