Thunderstorm lashes Shimla

SHIMLA: A thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds and hail lashed Shimla and surrounding areas on Monday night throwing normal life out of gear. The storm which lasted about two hours blew off roofs at some places, uprooted trees and interrupted power supply.

A thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds and hail lashed Shimla and surrounding areas on Monday night throwing normal life out of gear. The storm which lasted about two hours blew off roofs at some places, uprooted trees and interrupted power supply.

Inmates of a house in Kaithu area were scared as they heard the cracking noise and found that the roof of their house was blown off. The storm caused sharp fall in mercury and minimum temperature dropped by five to seven degree and stayed four to eight degree below normal.

The weather became chilly in tribal areas and higher hills. Keylong and Kalpa in Lahaul -Spiti and Kinnaur recorded a low of 5.2 degree and 6.4 degree while Kufri and Manali recorded minimum temperature at 7.6 degree and 8.0 degree, followed by Shimla at 11.7 degree, Bhuntar 13.2 degree, Nahan 13.9 degree, Dharamsala 14.6 degree, Solan 16.8 degree and Una 21.0 degree.

Widespread rain occurred in the region. Pandoh was the wettest with 39 mm rain while Mandi, Banjjar, Jogindernagar and Baijnath received 25 mm, 24 mm, 22 mm and 21 mm rain. Ghumarwin and Gohar had 15 mm rain, followed by Bijahi 13 mm, Nagrota Suriyan, Khadrala and Guler 12 mm, Manali 11 mm and Sarahan and Bharari10 mm.

Mercury dropped by two degree at Una, which was the hottest in the region with a high of 40 degree, while Bilaspur and Sundernagar recorded the maximum temperature of 38 degree and 36.8 degree followed by Solan at 34.8 degree, Bhuntar 34.0 degree, Nahan 33.8 degree, Palampur 31.8 degree, Dharamsala and Shimla 28.8 degree, Manali 25.8 degree, Kalpa 23.2 degree, Kufri 21.4 degree, 23.8 degree and Keylong 19.4 degree.

The four-day International Shimla Summer Festival which started on Monday was saved from being washed out as the festival ended at 10 pm while the thunderstorm struck at 11pm. The stormy weather conditions are considered harmful for fruit crops, dry fruits and vegetable crops.

The local MeT office has warned of thunderstorm accompanied with squall andgusty winds, with speed upto 30-40 kmph in mid and lower hills on Tuesday and Wednesday and predicted rain and thundershowers at many places in mid hills and rain and snow on the higher hills for six days from Wednesday onwards due to fresh western disturbance in the region.

Spokesperson of Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam said 45 mld water pumping for Shimla town had been maintained even as the temperature soared in summers. There were a few changes in the supply schedule due to power shortage or bad weather, but there were no plans of rationing or discontinuing the daily supply in the near future. Moreover, there would be no ban on construction activity and new connections be allotted this summer, he added.

Alert for tourists

Mandi: The Mandi administration has sounded the alarm for the tourists visiting Mandi and Kullu-Manali to avoid venturing near the Beas because the Pandoh and Larji dam authorities may release water anytime. Shrawan Manta, Additional DM, Mandi issued a warning urging people and tourists to follow the directions. — TNS


Extensive damage in Palampur

PALAMPUR, June 4

High-velocity winds accompanied by rain and hailstorm lashed Palampur and its adjoining areas last  night. As per reports,  a number of houses were damaged. Besides, public property  also suffered extensive damage.

The winds continued for more than  six hours.  The roofs of several houses were blown away. Vehicular traffic on several  roads  also remained suspended  following felling of heavy trees.  Dozens of villages in the region are without power supply  for nearly five hours. 

A  Tribune team visited several part of   the storm-hit areas and found that trees were uprooted,  damaging electricity poles. 

This resulted in  blackout. The HP State Electricity Board engineers were making efforts to  repair the  damaged power equipment. 

Ghuggar, Aima, Suggar, lower Palampur, Kalu Di Hatti, HP Agriculture University, Rajpur, Tanda and Bundla were the worst-affected areas where residents remained without power.   The power supply to rural areas of Palampur like Paror, Kharot, Mehanja and Bhawarna  was also disrupted.
