With a sharp rise in tourist footfall near Atal Tunnel and the scenic village of Sissu in Lahaul and Spiti district, the Lahaul and Spiti police has intensified security measures to maintain law and order in the region. Authorities have deployed additional personnel and launched stricter monitoring following incidents involving unruly tourists and traffic violations.

The surge in visitors comes after the panchayats of Sissu and Koksar lifted a temporary ban on tourist activities. The restriction had been in place from January 20 to February 28 due to religious events and community activities in the two panchayats. Since the ban was removed on March 1, the area has witnessed a significant increase in tourist arrivals, especially bikers and adventure travellers heading towards high-altitude destinations.

However, the sudden influx has also led to law and order concerns. Two days ago, two groups of bikers reportedly clashed in the Sissu region, prompting police authorities to tighten surveillance and increase their presence in the area. Officials said the step was necessary to prevent such incidents and maintain a safe environment for visitors and local residents alike.

Traffic violations have also become a growing concern. In nearby Manali in Kullu district, the police have issued more than 1,000 traffic challans in just four days. Authorities said many bikers were found violating traffic rules, including reckless riding, overspeeding and performing dangerous stunts on public roads.

Speaking about the measures taken, Lahaul and Spiti SP Shivani Mehla said the police have deployed a Quick Reaction Team (QRT) in the key tourist areas to ensure safety and maintain order.

“In view of the increasing number of tourists at Atal Tunnel and Sissu, and to ensure the safety of all visitors, the district police’s Quick Reaction Team has been deployed in the tourism zones,” she said. “The team is maintaining law and order while also conducting regular vehicle checks to prevent any untoward incidents and to ensure that tourists can enjoy their journey in a safe environment.”

The police have appealed to tourists and local residents to cooperate with authorities by following traffic rules and adhering to safety guidelines. “Your safety is our priority,” the police said in an advisory, urging visitors to act responsibly while traveling in the region.

With the tourist season picking up pace in Lahaul and Spiti, authorities say strict monitoring and public cooperation will be key to ensuring that the picturesque destinations remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.
