Tributes paid to Maj Somnath Sharma on birth anniversary

Floral tributes were paid to Major Somnath Sharma, India’s first Param Vir Chakra awardee, on his birth anniversary at Palampur yesterday.
Local MLA Ashish Butail paid floral tributes at the statue of martyr Major Somnath Sharma and bowed in reverence on behalf of a grateful nation. He was joined by Radhika Shaunik, the niece of the martyr.
Speaking on the occasion, Butail said the supreme sacrifice of Major Somnath Sharma was a matter of immense pride not only for Palampur and Himachal Pradesh, but for the entire country. He emphasised that the life and heroism of Major Somnath Sharma continue to inspire generations and serve as a shining example of courage, patriotism and selfless service to the nation.
Mayor Gopal Nag, Deputy Mayor Raj Kumar and several councillors paid their respects and reiterated their commitment to preserving the memory of the war hero as a treasured legacy of the city. Municipal Commissioner Netra Meti, SDM OP Yadav and Tehsildar Sajan Bagga offered wreaths at the statue and paid homage to the brave soldier. The officials recalled Major Somnath Sharma’s indomitable courage during the 1947 India-Pakistan war, when he made the supreme sacrifice while defending the Srinagar Airport from enemy.
