Two drug rehabilitation centres at Damtal shut after public opposition
Operators probably closed the centres following an intensive inspection by police and administration officials, says Nurpur SP
Two drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centres at Damtal in Indora subdivision of Kangra district closed on Saturday following opposition from local residents and regular monitoring by the local police and the administration.
As per information, some individuals from other state were operating these centres. Local residents had been apprehensive about the treatment of drug addicts admitted to the two centres. SP, Nurpur, Kulbhushan Verma said that the local residents had also raised the issue at the Nasha Nivaran Committee meeting at Damtal on January 8.
He added that following public opposition, the police, in collaboration with the local administration, were regularly inspecting and monitoring the activities of these centres. The operators probably closed the centres following an intensive inspection.
Verma said that earlier, too, a drug de-addiction centre at Milwan village being operated by an individual from other state was shut. Meanwhile, persons, who had been undergoing treatment at these centres, rushed to a psychiatrist at Pathankot in Punjab.
Inquiries revealed that the drug addicts were allegedly being given overdoses of the medicines at two centres against the notified guidelines (drug de-addiction) of the Indian Psychiatry Society. People urged the administration to regularly inspect all 14 private drug de-addiction centres operating in Nurpur and ensure strict enforcement of the notified guidelines for the treatment of drug addicts there.
