VC: Women play key role in agriculture

The College of Home Science in CSK HP Agriculture University today celebrated “Women in Agriculture Day” here.

Addressing farm women and scientists, Vice-Chancellor Prof Ashok Kumar Sarial appreciated the crucial role of women in farm production. He said the government had introduced many schemes for the welfare of farmers, including farm women, and they should avail of their benefits.

He said some women were role models for others as they were putting extra efforts through self-help groups to supplement their family income. Highlighting the importance of quality education, he said a large number of girls were coming forward to enrol in agricultural programmes and around 58 per cent of girls constituted academic programmes in four constituent colleges at the university.

He also honoured some farm women of self help groups from Molichak, Kandwari, Spedu and Padhiarkhar for their exceptional work. He also released a brochure of all India coordinated research project on home science.

Director of Extension Education Dr Yash Pal Thakur said women played an important role in livestock keeping, including marketing of milk and milk products, and they should attend training sessions at the university and Krishi Vigyan Kendras.
