The hospital management took action after a dog was seen carrying a human foot in its mouth near its premises, triggering panic among people. A video of the incident also made rounds on social media. Upon receiving information, the authorities constituted a fact-finding committee comprising Nursing Superintendent Leelawati, Nodal Officer, Biomedical Waste, Rajesh Verma and Matron Leela Bodh to ascertain the facts. The committee was assigned the task to fix responsibility and identify lapses to prevent recurrence of such a ghastly incident.

The committee’s report revealed that on February 19, an above knee amputation of a patient was done under the CTVS Department and the amputated limb was kept duly packed in a proper waste bag in the biomedical waste complex of AIMSS for further disposal by the biomedical waste disposing agency (enviro engineers).

However, on the night of February 21, while bringing biomedical waste to the biomedical waste complex, sanitation workers kept its door open and unattended and probably during this time the dog took away the amputated limb from the packed bag. An empty bag was discovered the next day outside the biomedical waste complex. Sanitation workers tried to trace the missing body part but in vain. However, a dog was today seen carrying the foot in its mouth. When security personnel tried to retrieve it, the dog became aggressive and ran away.

The sanitation contractor has also been instructed to ensure proper storage and disposal of biomedical waste as per the guidelines and the biomedical waste disposing agency has been instructed to ensure timely clearance of biomedical waste from the hospital premises.
