Mandi, December 23

The state government is planning to develop the lake of the Larji hydropower project for water sports to boost tourism in the Banjar segment of Kullu district. For this, the government plans to start boating on the lines of the Sukhna lake in Chandigarh.

The state government has approved a budget of Rs 3.7 crore for the purpose.

Stating this, Banjar MLA Surendra Shourie said the area of the Larji lake would be beautified and water sports activities would be organised in coming days. All safety arrangements would be made for the purpose, said the MLA. Near the Larji power house, a Rs 30-lakh compartment would be developed.

“Apart from this, a cafeteria and two restrooms will be constructed for the comfort of tourists. In the Banjar assembly segment, there are a number of beautiful places which can be developed for tourism activities,” said the MLA.

He said the state government was keen on using the reservoirs of hydro power projects for water sports activity to generate revenue and attract more tourists. Earlier, there was a proposal to organise water sports activities at the Pandoh dam, but the authorities did not allow it citing safety concerns. The plan was later rejected by the Mandi district administration.
