Young writer of Himachal Ayush Sharma has been selected under the Pradhan Mantri Yuva Mentorship Scheme to undertake research on the life and contributions of renowned folk singer Gambhari Devi.
The research will focus on Gambhari Devi’s contribution to Pahari traditions, folk life and the cultural landscape of Himachal Pradesh. The National Book Trust will publish the work. Under the scheme, 43 writers below the age of 30 have been selected from across the country, including Ayush from Himachal Pradesh.
A native of Chalheli village in Bilaspur district, Ayush is at present pursuing BBA from Manipal University, Jaipur. His father, Gian Chand, works in the state Health Department while his mother Anita Devi is a homemaker.
The research will be conducted under the guidance of Kamla Kaushik, a retired professor of the University of Delhi, who hails from Gohar in Mandi district and has extensively researched Himachali folk music.
Gambhari Devi is widely credited with giving a distinct identity to Pahari folk music and strengthening the region’s cultural heritage through her powerful and melodious voice. Born in Bandla village of Bilaspur district in 1922, she played a key role in popularising local traditions and folk narratives.
In recognition of her immense contribution, Gambhari Devi was honoured with the Himachal Academy of Arts Achievement Award in 2001 and the prestigious Tagore Akademi Award by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2011.
Her iconic folk song “Khana Peena Nand Leni O Gambhariye…” continues to resonate with people and remains an integral part of Himachal’s cultural legacy. Gambhari Devi passed away on January 8, 2013, leaving behind a rich musical heritage.
