5 engineering students drown in Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh
2 students manage to escape as they know swimming while the others could not
Five engineering students drowned in the Godavari river here in Eluru district on Friday, while two others survived, a police official said.
This happened when a group of seven students entered the river to bathe, they said.
"Five (engineering) students drowned after they ventured into the river for a bath, and two survived," Polavaram Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) M Venkateswara told PTI.
The DSP said that two students managed to escape as they know swimming while the others could not.
He said that the students were unaware of the depth of the river and entered the water assuming it was shallow, leaving them with no opportunity to escape.
Three bodies were recovered, sent for post-mortem, and handed over to their parents, said the DSP.
Efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining two bodies, with State Disaster Response Force teams deployed and conducting search operations under official supervision, said Venkateswara.
Police have registered a case and an investigation is on.
